President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized that implementing the National Health Insurance (NHI) is crucial to closing the gap between public and private healthcare in South Africa.
In his latest weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa outlined government priorities in the health sector, reaffirming that the NHI remains a central solution to reducing inequality in access to quality healthcare services. His remarks follow a recent medical breakthrough within the country’s public healthcare system.
The President pointed to developments at Mankweng Hospital in Limpopo province, where doctors successfully separated conjoined twins. He said this achievement highlights what the public healthcare system is capable of when it is adequately resourced and supported. He added that the successful surgery reflects the untapped potential within public health institutions and reinforces the need for the full implementation of the NHI.
Ramaphosa acknowledged that despite progress in strengthening public healthcare, significant inequalities in access still persist. Many South Africans he noted, continue to face barriers to quality care due to their income levels and where they live.
“Access to quality healthcare should not depend on one’s income or geographic location, but must be a right enjoyed by all,” Ramaphosa said.
