Police on High Alert Ahead of Julius Malema Sentencing in Firearm Case

Date:

Police across South Africa are on heightened alert ahead of the expected sentencing of Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). It is scheduled for Thursday 16 April, at the East London Regional Court in the Eastern Cape.

Malema is set to be sentenced following his October conviction for breaching the Firearms Control Act. It stems from an incident in 2018, when he discharged live ammunition during the EFF’s anniversary celebrations.

In the lead-up to the sentencing, EFF supporters have held night vigils, while a significant crowd gathered outside the court on Wednesday 15 April, during the first day of pre-sentencing proceedings. Authorities anticipate continued public interest and possible gatherings as the court delivers its decision.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that law enforcement has implemented extensive security measures nationwide.

“We would like to assure the nation that we have a comprehensive plan in place across the country to ensure all the gatherings happen in a peaceful manner,” Mathe said.

She added that National Commissioner Fannie Masemola met with all nine provincial commissioners on Wednesday 15 April, to assess the situation following the day’s events.

“No incidents were reported. All the EFF members gathered in an orderly and peaceful manner. That is what we are also expecting today. After the outcome, the members must conduct themselves in a peaceful and calm manner. So far there is nothing to stress about, but we do remain on high alert.” Mathe stated.

Mathe emphasized that police have strengthened their readiness based on past experiences, particularly the unrest linked to July 2021.

“Intelligence is on the ground. We have placed members strategically in all hot-spots. But at the end of the day we rely on EFF leaders to talk to their members to conduct themselves properly. Should they step out of line, we are well prepared. We will not hesitate to act decisively where there is lawlessness.”

Authorities remain vigilant as the country awaits the court’s decision, urging supporters to maintain calm and order regardless of the outcome.
