The Graaff-Reinet community, together with residents of Aberdeen and Adendorp, is mobilising for a major protest against Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie’s decision to change the town’s name. A WhatsApp group formed in response to the announcement has already attracted nearly 1 000 members, many of whom have expressed frustration and concern about the potential impact of the decision on the town’s heritage and local economy.
Petition forms will be made available tomorrow, allowing residents to formally register their opposition to the proposed name change. Organisers believe the petition will demonstrate the depth of public sentiment and form a critical part of efforts to persuade the minister to reconsider the decision.
A peaceful march is also being planned and is expected to draw significant participation. Community leaders have emphasised that the action is intended to ensure that local voices are heard and respected in the decision-making process. “We are not against progress or change, but we want it to be done in a way that respects our community and our history” said one community leader.
The protest is being organised by a coalition of local residents and business owners who say they are determined to protect the town’s identity. As momentum continues to build, it is clear that opposition to the name change remains strong and that the issue is far from settled.
The Indaba team will continue to monitor and report on developments surrounding this unfolding community action.
