Hundreds Displaced After Fire Destroys Informal Settlement in Gonubie

Date:

On Thursday 12 March, a devastating fire tore through an informal settlement in Gonubie in the Eastern Cape, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes as flames rapidly spread through the densely populated community.

Preliminary reports indicate that the blaze may have started when a group of boys were allegedly smoking near the settlement. It is believed that the fire ignited nearby materials before quickly spreading from one structure to another.

Informal settlements are often built using highly flammable materials such as wood, plastic and corrugated iron, which can cause fires to spread rapidly once they break out.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene in an effort to contain the blaze and assist affected residents. Authorities evacuated hundreds of people from the area to ensure their safety while firefighters worked to bring the flames under control.

Fortunately, no deaths or injuries have been reported at this stage. However, many families have been left displaced after their homes and personal belongings were destroyed in the fire.

Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the exact cause of the blaze and to assess the full extent of the damage.

Meanwhile, relief efforts are expected to be coordinated to support residents who have lost their homes and belongings in the disaster
