Taxi Industry Calls for Fare Increases as Fuel Prices Surge

Date:

The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) has called on taxi operators to implement fare increases ranging from R3 to R6 for local trips and between R10 and R30 for long-distance travel, citing sharp increases in fuel costs.

This appeal follows a recent announcement by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, confirming that petrol prices have risen by R3 per litre. Meanwhile, diesel prices have seen a steeper hike, increasing by between R7.37 and R7.51 per litre for both grades.

While the NTA has welcomed the government’s short-term relief measures introduced on March 31, 2026 it maintains that additional support is necessary to cushion the industry.

NTA spokesperson Theo Malele warned that the rising fuel costs will negatively impact both taxi operators and commuters.

“The increases will place further strain on both operators and commuters,” Malele said.
