The House of Traditional Leaders and Department of Health in the Eastern Cape are working with partners to make sure that safe circumcision is widely available and that no initiates suffer injury or death in the future.
Every initiate has a right to safe circumcision during customary male initiation. Safe circumcision ensures that traditional rituals are observed and are hygienic.
A workshop was held recently in May at the Alex Laing hall with all the medical staff (traditional surgeons and traditional nurses) involved in the programme. Since the winter initiation started last week, every initiate has a right to safe circumcision during customary initiation. All medical staff involved in the programme as well as initiates respect and understand the traditional culture.
