South Africa’s entertainment industry is mourning the death of veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi, who passed away at the age of 63 after a career spanning more than five decades.
His family confirmed that he died on the evening of 15 July 2026 following complications related to diabetes.
Sebogodi was widely recognised for his memorable performances in television productions including Generations, where he played Kenneth Mashaba, Suburban Bliss, Bophelo ke Semphego, Redemption and Scandal!. His contribution to the industry earned him two South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs).
Among those paying tribute was former Minister of Police and Transport Fikile Mbalula, who described Sebogodi as “a true legend” of South African television.
Although many South Africans knew him through his television roles, Sebogodi remained deeply committed to the theatre throughout his career. His productions often explored social issues and reflected South Africa’s lived experiences.
Shortly before his death, he presented Black Moon at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda. The production explored themes of pain, pride, religion and South Africa’s unique history, demonstrating his continued passion for storytelling and the performing arts.
Sebogodi leaves behind a legacy that has shaped South African theatre and television, inspiring generations of actors and audiences through his remarkable body of work.
