On Thursday 6 August The Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipal Libraries and local schools joined hands in marking International Literacy Day at the Kroonvale Library, with learners taking part in a range of activities designed to promote reading, knowledge and a love of books.
The event formed part of International Literacy Day 2026, which is being commemorated under the theme “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.” This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the global event established by UNESCO.
Learners participated enthusiastically in activities that tested their reading abilities, general knowledge and understanding of literature.
The activities included reading in Afrikaans – a quiz titled “How Well Do You Know Your Province?”, as well as book reviews presented in Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa.
Schools that participated were Lingcom Primary, Ryneveld Primary, Narsingstraat Public Primary, Graaff-Reinet Primary, Asherville secondary, Spandau secondary and Nqweba seconday.
Librarians were Jika Jika Nosiphelo – Principal Librarian (Graaff Reinet Depot), Onke Mjongozi(Kroonvale Library), Thobile Ngwenya(Graaf Reinet Depot), Kwezikazi Mabija(Assistant Librarian at Adendorp Library) and Thembani Busakwe (uMasizakhe Library)
The celebration provided learners with an opportunity to develop their reading and communication skills while encouraging them to engage with books and literature in different languages.

Reading in Afrikaans: Chanize Soul – Lingcom primary school
How well do you know your Province: Mandon Mafeking – Asherville secondary school
Book review in English: Iviwe Hlonitshwayo from Nqweba Secondary School
Book review in IsiXhosa: Lunikho Tyaliti from Nqweba Secondary School
International Literacy Day continues to highlight the importance of literacy as a foundation for education, personal development and stronger communities.
Winners will be going to the International Literacy Day District event and Book Club Festival eliminations that will be held in Pearston on the 13th of August 2026 and will compete with other 6 Municipalities.
