Mihlali Makhalima, the principal of Ulwazi Senior Secondary in the Eastern Cape, is back in his office after being accused of misusing school funds of over R1 million. This comes after his suspension was lifted. Following the allegations that he was spending millions intended for school necessities on luxury items, including alcohol, fuel and luxury meals, he was placed on precautionary suspension. The school necessities included learning materials, maintenance and school nutrition.
“More than R250,000 was spent at upmarket restaurants, including Grazia Fine Food & Wine and La Grato. A further R450,000 was withdrawn from ATMs, and R226,000 in cash back from tills at grocery stores,” stated by the Democratic Alliance’s 2025 released statement which indicated the financial records.
Eastern Cape education spokesperson, Mali Mtima, stated that although his suspension has been lifted, the case continues. He also added that Makhalima’s return to the school comes with conditions. “Following a review of the matter, the department has decided that the principal will return to work and continue performing curriculum-related duties. However, all financial responsibilities and delegations will be withdrawn pending the investigation,” he said.
