If NSFAS rejected your application, you can appeal within 30 days. Submitting the right documents and following the steps below improves your chances.
Who Can Appeal
You can appeal if:
- Your application was rejected
- Your funding was stopped (for continuing students)
- You applied during the official period
You cannot appeal if:
- Your course is not funded by NSFAS
- You’ve used up your allowed funding years (N+ rule)
How to Appeal
1. Log in
Go to my.nsfas.org.za and sign in with your ID number and password.
2. Check your status
Click “Track Funding Progress.” If it says “Unsuccessful” or “Rejected,” you’ll see a “Submit Appeal” button.
3. Submit your appeal
Click “Submit Appeal” and select the reason that matches why you were rejected.
What to Upload
Include:
- A short letter explaining why NSFAS should reconsider
- Certified documents that support your reason, such as:
- Proof of income change (retrenchment letter, UIF documents)
- Medical reports
- Death certificate (if a parent/guardian passed away)
- Correct academic records
Make sure all documents are clear and certified.
What Happens Next
- NSFAS will confirm they received your appeal
- They will review your documents
- You’ll get a decision: approved or rejected
- Check the “Appeals” tab in your portal for updates
