A total of 231 residents of Mandela Park in Robert Sobukwe Town have received title deeds for their government-subsidised homes, giving them formal proof of ownership and greater security for their families.
The handover took place as part of the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements’ drive to speed up the issuing of title deeds to qualifying beneficiaries across the province. For many residents, the occasion marked an important moment as they formally became owners of the homes they have lived in.
The programme also made sure that elderly and disabled beneficiaries who could not attend the ceremony were included.
A delegation visited the homes of four beneficiaries to personally hand over their title deeds. They were Mrs Tina Plaatjies, Mr Dawid and Mrs Mary Breda, Mr Arries, Mrs Sarah Mienies, and Ms Patricia Koopman. The delegation included Sarah Baartman District Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Deon de Vos, Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Willem Safers, Ward Councillor Cllr Xolile Galada, and the Department of Human Settlements Chief Director for Properties and Asset Management, Ms Nomboniso Kettledas. Officials from the municipalities and department also took part.
At the community hall, beneficiaries welcomed the handover with excitement and gratitude. Among them was 50-year-old Ms Gwendoline Williams, who said receiving her title deed gave her peace of mind. She said she was grateful to have formal ownership of her home and the security it provides for her and her children.
A title deed is more than just a legal document. It confirms ownership and provides families with greater security. It can also become an important asset that can be passed on to future generations. The Sarah Baartman District Municipality congratulated all 231 beneficiaries and recognised the work of the Department of Human Settlements and Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality in helping qualifying residents secure formal ownership of their homes.
