Tebello Mosikili, Deputy National Police Commissioner, mentioned that many suspects had been arrested for Gender-Based Violence (GBV), in the past seven days across the country. Mosikili made the statement outside the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court, east of Johannesburg.
“352 suspects have been arrested across the country in the past seven days on GBV related cases only. Our message to the perpetrators of violence against women is clear, it is just a matter of time until we get to you,” said Mosikili.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has recognised that GBV needs a strong reaction from the government. Speaking to the reporters at the Country Club, Ramaphosa stated that women should not have to live in fear of being abused or killed.
According to President Ramaphosa, an inter-ministerial committee is also developing several initiatives to strengthen the government’s response. “Gender-Based Violence is not only a problem for women, but also a national crisis, and we need to be treating it as exactly that. We are even going to be deploying more more resources and technology to ensuring that we deal with the fear that women are now subjected to,” said the President.
