Graaff-Reinet Court Confusion as Arson Suspect Re-Arrested in Kroonvale Case

Date:

Two men have appeared in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate’s Court on charges of malicious damage to property and arson following incidents reported in Kroonvale.

Residents who laid the complaint say they are confused after reports emerged that one of the key suspects had initially been released, despite what they describe as inconsistencies in arrest records.

According to residents, the suspect was arrested on Friday, 8 May. However, court records indicate that the arrest took place on 6 May, suggesting the accused may have spent more than 48 hours in custody before appearing in court.

The case involves two co-accused who appeared in court on 11 May. The matter was postponed to 18 May 2026 to allow the accused to secure legal representation.

Community members expressed dissatisfaction with the developments and reportedly approached investigating officers seeking clarity on the arrest dates and procedural handling of the case.

It has since been confirmed that Maurize Booysen was re-arrested on 12 May and is expected to appear in court alongside the co-accused on 18 May.

Residents allege that Booysen was involved in the illegal buying of stolen materials, including iron, copper wires and cables, and he is further accused of instigating arson-related activities.
