Authorities are investigating the cause of a deadly crash between a bus and a motor vehicle on the N6 road between KuGompo (formerly East London) and Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape.
The collision occurred on Sunday night 8 March, and claimed the lives of five people while leaving 60 others injured.
According to officials, the bus was carrying about 60 Zimbabwean nationals and was travelling toward Stutterheim at the time of the crash. The car involved had five occupants. It became lodged underneath the bus during the impact, and emergency services had to use the jaws of life to retrieve the deceased from the vehicle.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Makhaya Komisa said the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
“The main cause of the crash will be subjected to further investigation by various law enforcement agencies. A case of culpable homicide and reckless driving has been opened at Stutterheim police station,” Komisa said.
Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha has extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“The MEC has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes the injured passengers a speedy recovery. He has also urged motorists to obey the rules of the road,” Komisa added on behalf of the department.
