Residents and young people gathered at the uMasizakhe Community Hall on 16 June to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprisings in an event organised by the Robert Sobukwe Town Steering Committee and several government departments, NGOs, and community partners. Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipality Special Program Unit, SAPS and Ending GBVF 100-Day challenges, the South African Youth Council, Department of Employment and Labour, Department of Health and SANParks(South African National Parks) were all involved.
The commemoration combined cultural performances with youth empowerment initiatives, providing information on employment opportunities, funding applications, CV writing, interview preparation, and government services.
Addressing the gathering, Robert Sobukwe Town Steering Committee youth representative Athe Singeni reflected on the courage of the 1976 generation and challenged today’s youth to confront modern struggles such as unemployment, poverty, and economic exclusion. Drawing from his own journey from Robert Sobukwe Town to international academic and professional success, he encouraged young people to believe that their circumstances do not define their future.
The event concluded with a call for unity, resilience, and active participation in building opportunities for future generations, keeping the spirit of June 16 alive through education, empowerment, and community development.
