Law enforcement agencies have been directed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to prioritise investigations into the killings of women in and around Kempton Park, Gauteng. Ramaphosa assured that no stone will be left unturned to confirm what happened and bring those responsible to justice. The President’s statement comes as concern continues to grow across the East Rand following the discovery of several women’s bodies in public spaces in Ekurhuleni over the past two months.
Five bodies of women were discovered in the Kempton Park area, with three found in Rhodesfield. The bodies were found half-naked with visible bruises. The latest body was found outside a clinic in Kwa-Thema , Springs, on Tuesday, while another woman’s body was discovered in Olifantsfontein on Monday. One of the women was identified as 29-year-old Elizabeth Moselakgomo, a runner who went missing during a routine run last week. Her body was found east of Johannesburg on Saturday, and identified by her relatives on Monday.
“One body was discovered by a passer-by on his way to work. One arrest has been made in connection with the first body, and the suspect remains in police custody,” stated Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. A link to the deaths by a serial killer has not been confirmed by the police, but they have stated that the similarities are sufficiently concerning to issue a public warning. Women in Kempton Park area have been warned to avoid walking or running alone, particularly in isolated areas.
The discoveries have sparked protests and renewed calls for greater police visibility and action to protect women. Ramaphosa stated that he had spoken to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Acting National Police Commissioner Fred Kekana, who briefed him on the investigation. “I have directed that these cases be prioritised and those responsible brought to justice,” Ramaphosa said.
A specialised multidisciplinary task team has been established to investigate the deaths and determine whether there is a link between the cases. President Ramaphosa extended his condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy. “I speak for all of us as I extend my deepest condolences to all families and communities affected by the killing of women recently found in Kempton Park,” he said.
