On Tuesday, 28 July 2026, five people died and one person was seriously injured in a head-on collision on the N2 near Mooiplaas, outside KuGompo. It was confirmed by the Eastern Cape Department of Transport that a Volkswagen polo and a Renault were involved in the collision.
As stated by the department, the Renault ignited following the impact. The driver of the Renault is believed to have been a teacher at Qumrha Primary School and the other four victims, one man and three women, were traveling in the Volkswagen Polo.
The only survivor who sustained critical injuries was rushed to a hospital in KuGompo City to be treated.
The collision transpired in the midst of adverse winter weather impacting parts of the Eastern Cape. Factors increasing the risks faced by motorists include wet and slippery roads, poor visibility and possible black ice in high-lying areas.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport shared their sympathy with the families who lost their loved ones.
“The Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and loved ones of the deceased and wishes the injured survivor a speedy recovery,” the department stated.
