CAS replaces the old system (CACH) and offers better support to help students find available study spaces. It also protects students from fake colleges.

Watch Out for Fake Colleges
The Minister warns students to avoid illegal colleges that charge fees but don’t offer real qualifications. Students should check if their college is registered by visiting www.dhet.gov.za. Only pay fees after confirming the institution is legitimate.
Mental Health Support Available
Starting tertiary education can be stressful. Free counselling is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students can call Higher Health on 0800 36 36 36 for emotional support, stress, or anxiety.
New Bursary Opportunities
Over 15,000 SETA bursaries are now available for students who don’t qualify for NSFAS, especially those in the “missing middle” and studying scarce skills. These bursaries cover tuition, books, and other costs at universities and TVET colleges.
Important Tips for Students and Parents
Students should only trust official communication from institutions and keep copies of application numbers and emails. Don’t pay anyone who promises placement or accommodation. If you don’t get accepted immediately, consider TVET colleges, community colleges, or bridging programmes. Students should also confirm accommodation before making travel plans.
