Hundreds of learners from schools across the Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipality benefited from a three-day Child Protection Awareness Campaign held from 26 to 28 May 2026.
The initiative was led through a partnership between the One’s Fate Foundation, Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipality and the South African Police Service (SAPS), with the aim of raising awareness about child safety, education, bullying, substance abuse and school attendance.
The campaign visited five schools, engaging learners through educational talks and the distribution of sanitary towels to support the dignity and well-being of young girls.
The outreach began at Ryneveld Primary School and Nqweba Secondary School in Robert Sobukwe Town, where learners received guidance on personal safety, children’s rights, peer pressure and the dangers of substance abuse.
On the second day, the team visited Adendorp Primary School and Isibane Primary School. Learners participated in interactive sessions focusing on bullying prevention, child rights and the role of law enforcement in protecting young people. The campaign also highlighted the importance of hygiene and access to sanitary products to help reduce school absenteeism among girls.
The final day concluded at Aberdeen Secondary School, where learners were encouraged to prioritise education, personal hygiene and positive community leadership. Information was also shared on where young people can seek help when faced with abuse, neglect or mental health challenges.
Organisers described the campaign as a successful example of multi-sector collaboration between community organisations, local government and law enforcement. The initiative created opportunities for learners to interact openly with authority figures while receiving practical support and valuable life skills.
Following the success of the campaign, One’s Fate Foundation has announced plans for its fourth annual sanitary towel drive during the first week of August as part of its Women’s Day outreach programme. The initiative will support underprivileged high schools across the Dr. Beyers Naudé and Blue Crane Route municipal areas.
Community members wishing to contribute sanitary towels can drop donations at Spar on Caledon Street or at the collection point in front of Shoprite every Saturday between 8:00 and 12:00.
The foundation hopes continued community support will help ensure that no learner misses valuable classroom time due to a lack of essential hygiene products.
