A stern warning has been issued by the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) against the hosting of unauthorised events during school hours. They cautioned that instructional time must be safeguarded as learners prepare for their final examinations.
“I acknowledge the value of support from external stakeholders for learners. However, such initiatives must strictly align with departmental protocols to prevent disruptions to teaching and learning during this crucial period,” explained ECDoE Head of Department Sharon Maasdorp.
Any school event is required to secure formal approval from the Head of Department through their respective district offices before they are held. This measure ensures the Accounting Officer remains informed of campus activities while protecting vital teaching and learning time. The department clearly mentioned awareness campaigns, motivational talks and “Anti-Pens Down” campaigns as activities that may not take place during tuition hours without prior official clearance. Additionally to departmental approval, schools and external organisers are expected to secure essential parental or guardian consent before including learners in activities outside their standard teaching and learning programme.
The department encourages strict compliance to these guidelines, warning that any school found to have breached these protocols will be subjected to the relevant internal development processes.
