Fatal U-Turn Crash Claims Seven Lives in Kariega

Date:

4 May 2026. Seven people lost their lives and at least 18 others were injured following a tragic collision between a minibus taxi and a bus in Kariega, Eastern Cape, on Monday morning.

According to the Eastern Cape Transport Department, the accident occurred when a minibus taxi transporting workers from KwaNobuhle to Kariega allegedly made a U-turn in front of an oncoming bus. The bus driver was reportedly the only person on board at the time of the crash.

Police have since launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose described the incident as devastating and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.

“This is a devastating crash that has claimed seven lives. It is alleged that the taxi made a U-turn in front of the oncoming bus, which led to the collision that claimed so many lives. The MEC for transport, Mr Xolile Nqatha, has extended words of condolences to those families that have lost their loved ones, while wishing those in hospital a speedy recovery. We are looking into the real cause of this crash, and we are urging motorists to remain extra vigilant and help us stop avoidable crashes like this one,” said Binqose.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash as officials call on drivers to remain vigilant to prevent further loss of life on the roads.
