Five people have died in two separate head-on collisions in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo within hours of each other.
On Friday 3rd of April, the first crash occurred early morning on the R67 between Seymour and Whittlesea in the Eastern Cape. According to Eastern Cape Provincial Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose, the collision involved an SUV and a sedan. Binqose said “two occupants in the SUV were burnt to death when it caught fire”. The driver of the sedan, who was alone, was declared dead at the scene. He added that a 13-year-old boy who was travelling in the SUV managed to escape the burning vehicle and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
In a separate incident on Thursday night, two people were killed and four others injured in a head-on collision between two sedans on the R81 at Dzingidzingi village near Giyani in Limpopo. Traffic authorities reported that the deceased, both women, were occupants of one of the vehicles. The injured, including both drivers, were transported to hospital.
Authorities suspect reckless driving may have contributed to the Limpopo crash, and investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
