As the country heads to the Local Government Elections, the final voter registration weekend for 2026 Local Government Elections have been announced by the IEC. The registrations will take place on the 1st and 2nd of August 2026.
All eligible South Africans who are not yet registered are encouraged by the Election Commission, to ensure that they are registered in the voting district where they ordinarily reside. Voters may only vote at the station where they are registered.
According to the voter registration statistics, there are a total of 28 669 284 citizens who successfully registered since the registrations opened earlier this year. Gauteng currently leads with the most registered citizens – a total of 6 625 464, and Northern Cape has the least registered citizens with only 693 846.
The importance of voting includes having the power to choose leaders who represent the interests of the people and shape the country’s future. It allows citizens to have a say in important issues such as service delivery, jobs, education and healthcare. Voting also holds leaders accountable and strengthens democracy by ensuring that people’s voices are heard.
