Eskom has announced that Unit 2 at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station has successfully completed 365 consecutive days of uninterrupted operation, maintaining an average performance level of 99.4 percent.
The power utility confirmed that Unit 2 returned to the national electricity grid on 30 December 2024 following a major upgrade as part of Eskom’s long-term reliability and maintenance programme. Since its return, the reactor has delivered stable electricity for a full year, marking a significant milestone for South Africa’s nuclear energy sector.
“This achievement highlights the depth of technical expertise and operational capability within South Africa’s nuclear workforce,” Eskom said in a statement. The sustained performance demonstrates the effectiveness of the upgrade work, as well as the skills of engineers, technicians, and operators responsible for running the country’s only nuclear power station.
Eskom noted that the last comparable operational run was recorded on 18 January 2022, when Unit 2 achieved 454 consecutive days of operation before entering a scheduled outage.
Extended periods of reliable nuclear generation are critical for supporting the national grid and enhancing energy security. Koeberg’s nuclear output provides a stable, low-carbon source of electricity and contributes significantly to South Africa’s baseload power supply.
Unit 2 is scheduled to enter its next planned maintenance outage on 26 April 2026. Eskom explained that such outages are routine safety procedures, allowing inspections, maintenance, and system upgrades to maintain high operational standards.
“Reaching the 365-day milestone represents another important step in ensuring the long-term reliability of Koeberg and strengthening the role of nuclear power in South Africa’s energy mix,” Eskom said.
