MultiChoice has announced that it will discontinue its streaming platform Showmax following a review of the company’s streaming operations.
The South African broadcaster, which operates the satellite television service DStv across Sub-Saharan Africa and GOtv in more than nine countries, said the decision comes after the streaming service recorded significant annual losses that proved unsustainable.
The development also follows the recent acquisition of MultiChoice by French broadcaster Canal+. The company said the decision aligns with Canal+’s focus on financial discipline and optimising investment across its platforms.
In an email sent to subscribers on Thursday, MultiChoice explained that the move forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen its digital offering while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the business.
The company assured customers that the shutdown process will not affect employees.
“Discontinuing Showmax will not result in any retrenchments,” MultiChoice said.
Subscribers were also informed that the platform will continue operating for the time being, meaning users can still access the service without disruption.
“You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time,” the company said in the email.
MultiChoice added that it is currently working on plans to ensure a smooth transition for users as the platform is gradually phased out.
