The Nieu-Bethesda Road (MR605) near Rubidge Kloof is on the verge of collapse. Groundwater damaging the road from beneath, combined with little to no maintenance, is contributing to this state of affairs. Furthermore, potholes and cracks have worsened over the years to the point where they pose a danger to vehicles. According to Councillor Ricardo Smith, the deterioration at Rubidge Kloof began as early as July, while other potholes and cracks have worsened over time. Earlier this year, the provincial roads department stated that they were in the process of appointing contractors to address the issue.
The matter has been raised on every possible platform—including the Roads Forum, the Provincial Legislature, and IGR (Intergovernmental Relations)—yet there has been no positive response to date. Promises were made by the Department of Provincial Roads and Transport Infrastructure two months ago, but there has been no progress regarding the condition of the road.
Nieu-Bethesda relies on emergency services—such as ambulances—and other government departments based in Graaff-Reinet(now Robert Sobukwe Town). The road is also used for scholar transport. Moreover, Nieu-Bethesda is a national tourist destination. If road MR605 collapses, Nieu-Bethesda will be cut off, said the councilor.
