South Africa is expected to experience a significant change in weather conditions from Thursday, 3 September, as a cut-off low moves across parts of the country. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that the weather system could bring heavy and disruptive rainfall, rough seas, damaging winds and a sharp drop in temperatures.
Parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape have been placed under a Yellow Level 4 warning. The Overberg and Garden Route in the Western Cape are among the areas of concern as the system makes landfall before moving eastwards. SAWS forecaster Tokelo Chiloane said coastal areas could experience waves of up to 5.5 metres, while strong winds and disruptive rainfall are expected over parts of the interior. Parts of the Eastern Cape, including Nelson Mandela Bay and Gqeberha, could also be affected by the system, with a Yellow Level 2 warning in place. Chiloane said additional warnings for areas further inland could be issued once the system makes landfall and its intensity can be assessed.
The cold-core system is also expected to cause a sharp drop in temperatures across several provinces, while the Eastern Cape could experience significant rainfall. SAWS has urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and monitor further weather warnings as the system moves eastwards.
