The Transnet Phelophepha Healthcare Train has arrived in Komani, Eastern Cape, where it will deliver essential medical services to the community over the next two weeks.
The team is currently addressing minor technical issues, with full operations expected to start on the 17th of March 2026, in the morning. Services will run on weekdays only, operating from 07:30 to 16:00.
The Phelophepha Train, meaning “good, clean health”, is a mobile healthcare facility run by the Transnet Foundation. Since launching in 1994, the programme has expanded from a single three-coach train to a fleet of three 19-coach trains. Collectively, they visit up to 70 rural communities each year and have reached more than 15 million people.
Each train is equipped to provide screenings for illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. Services also include pap smears for women and prostate screenings for men.
In addition, the train offers emergency medical care supported by diagnostic equipment like cardiac monitors and defibrillators. Patients can also access medication, health education, and counselling.
While stationed in Komani, residents will be able to receive these crucial services, including prescriptions and educational support, without having to travel to distant hospitals or clinics.
The initiative continues to play a vital role in improving access to healthcare, bringing much-needed support and services to underserved communities throughout South Africa.
