Agriculture has once again been highlighted as a key driver of economic development in rural KuGompo during the 13th annual Umzimvubu Municipal Agricultural Show, held from 8–9 April 2026 in KwaBhaca. Hosted by the Umzimvubu Local Municipality, the event aimed to promote farming, strengthen local livelihoods, and create opportunities for both established and emerging farmers.
Held under the theme “Growing Together: Advancing Agriculture Through Unity, Trade and Sustainability,” the show brought together farmers who showcased a wide range of fresh agricultural produce. It served as an important platform to demonstrate that agriculture is not only viable but also a sustainable economic activity capable of transforming rural communities. The initiative also seeks to encourage wider participation in farming while reshaping perceptions of the sector as inclusive and accessible to all.

Among the participants was emerging farmer Nontuthuzelo Mbele, whose farming operations are contributing meaningfully to job creation and poverty reduction in her community. “I am into farming, and I am dealing with livestock farming, including poultry, piggery, and I contribute to the fight against poverty. I am able to employ more than 14 part-time employees and they get paid daily. These workers are now able to feed their families because of the vegetable projects where we produce cabbage, broccoli, potatoes and maize, and by that they get job opportunities,” said Mbele.
The Umzimvubu Local Municipality reaffirmed its commitment to supporting emerging farmers through financial assistance and improved access to markets. Acting mayor Inga Nodali emphasized that the initiative is also intended to transform how farming is perceived within communities. “This programme for the municipality aims to educate that farming is not for rural people, or people who are not employed, or uneducated people. It is for everyone, it is an opportunity where everyone can grow. It is also to assist the community, we are showcasing the products of people who have been assisted by the municipality,”
The Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency (ECRDA) also participated in the event, using the platform to engage directly with communities, stakeholders, and emerging farmers. The Agency not only shared its vision but demonstrated its commitment to inclusive rural development through its guiding principle, “Uphuhliso lwamaphandle oluquka uluntu ngokubanzi,” which emphasizes development that includes all members of society and ensures that no community is left behind.

Overall, the agricultural show forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the local economy, create employment, and promote sustainable livelihoods in rural areas. This reinforces the critical role agriculture plays in driving inclusive growth.
