The driving licence validity period extension has been approved by the cabinet from five years to 10 years. The extension only covers light motor vehicles, which includes driving licence for Codes A, A1, B and EB.
Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, announced the extension and briefed the media on the results of the Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, 29 July 2026.
According to Ntshavheni, Professional Driver’s Permits (PDP) will continue on the two years renewal basis, while heavy and public transport remains on the existing two or five-years renewal cycles.
Ntshavheni also mentioned that the starting date for the extension has not yet been confirmed since the implementation procedure requires legislative amendments.
“Motorists must therefore continue to renew expired driving licence cards until the new law takes effect,” she added.
