The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture has handed over industrial sewing machines and overlockers to 20 clothing and textile enterprises in OR Tambo, aiming to boost local manufacturing and job creation. MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe led the handover, part of the provincial government’s enterprise development and inclusive economic growth initiative. Over R2.2 million has been allocated to support 103 clothing and textile cooperatives province-wide.
At the Tsolo Agriculture and Rural Development Institute (TARDI), Kontsiwe highlighted the clothing and textile sector’s role in boosting the province’s GDP. “One of the reasons we are distributing these machines is to improve local enterprises and stimulate job creation,” she said. The initiative aims to enhance production capacity, quality, and meet growing market demand, particularly for traditional attire during the festive season.
The handover follows a feasibility study by the Localisation Support Fund, outlining a pathway to expand domestic sourcing in line with the Retail-Clothing, Textile, Footwear and Leather Masterplan. The study indicates rising demand in South Africa’s retail sector, with retailers willing to source up to 81 million additional garments locally per year by 2030, translating to approximately R7.9 billion in annual manufacturing output.
OR Tambo District leaders emphasised implementation-focused leadership. Local Economic Development Portfolio Head Mdubi Voko said the machines would empower beneficiaries to grow their businesses and create employment opportunities. Local farmer Xolile Nkompela welcomed the initiative, calling for continuous monitoring of resources to prevent theft and misuse. He raised concerns over escalating livestock theft, calling for dedicated intervention teams.
Kontsiwe confirmed surveillance cameras had been installed in livestock theft hotspots, but some had been vandalised. Beneficiaries appreciated the support, with Masiyihati Madikizela saying the machines would improve her work quality, and Yoliswa Mtikraka crediting the department for investing in their businesses.
Kontsiwe also raised awareness about Foot and Mouth Disease, urging livestock owners to comply with transport permit requirements and confirming vaccine procurement for identified hotspots. The initiative promotes inclusive economic growth, strengthens rural enterprises, and builds a resilient local manufacturing sector.
