Police in Matatiele in the Eastern Cape have launched an intensive manhunt after eight detainees escaped from custody at the Afsondering Police Station cells in Maluti on Saturday.
The escapees have been identified as Asiphe Yawu, Abraham Gobozi, Kwanele Mzala, Siphelele Mkhulisi, Thabo Nana, Siphelele Nondolo, Anele Ludidi and Sinethemba Mazendala. Authorities confirmed that the men managed to break out of the holding cells, although details of how the escape was carried out have not yet been disclosed.
In response to the incident, police have also opened a separate case of aiding and abetting to investigate whether the detainees received assistance in executing their escape.
Police are appealing to members of the public to assist with information that could lead to the recapture of the suspects. Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact Sergeant Matabane at 076 342 4033 or Constable Mantelefu at 073 109 7962. Officials have assured that all information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality.
Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana stated that the circumstances surrounding the escape are currently under investigation, saying “the circumstances surrounding the incident are forming part of the investigation.”
She further warned the public not to take matters into their own hands. “Members of the public are cautioned not to apprehend the escapees themselves as they are dangerous criminals. All information will be treated confidentially.”
