KROONVALE – A rich legacy of gospel music and spiritual inspiration will be celebrated this year as the renowned Ephphatha Gospel Band marks its 50th anniversary with a special Easter Sunday concert in Kroonvale.
Ephphatha, a name meaning “Be Opened” in Hebrew, was established in 1976 by the late Frikkie Vers, Willie Claasen, Freddie Vorster and Johannes Baartman. The founding meeting took place at the home of the late Freddie Vorster, where the vision of forming a gospel group rooted in faith and community first came to life.
The group drew its name from the biblical passage in Mark 7:34, where Jesus healed a blind and deaf mute man, symbolising spiritual awakening and hope — values that would later define the band’s musical journey.
Ephphatha became the first and only gospel band of the Apostolic Faith Mission in Kroonvale, with their debut performance held at the Apostolic Faith Mission Church. Over time, the group welcomed new members including Chrissie Isaacs, Lydia Isaacs, Selwyn Welcome and Willy Leonard, strengthening its musical foundation.
As years passed, changes in members occurred due to personal commitments and relocation. Founding member Frikkie Vers moved to Paarl after his marriage, while Willie Claasen also departed the group. Remaining members Freddie Vorster, Johannes Baartman and Chrissie Isaacs continued to carry the vision forward.
Under the leadership of Johannes Baartman, new talent was recruited including Awie Stevens, Daniel Beatle Williams, the late Freddie Baartman, Mario Minnaar, Solomon Lewies, Klaas Meintjies and Gordon “Sos” Cona. The band grew in popularity and travelled across South Africa, spreading gospel music and uplifting audiences through song and ministry.
Now, nearly five decades later, the current members have decided to honour the group’s enduring legacy by celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026. The milestone will be marked with a gospel concert scheduled to take place on Easter Sunday at the Kroonvale Primary School Hall.
The celebration is expected to bring together past and present members, supporters and community residents to reflect on the band’s history and its contribution to gospel music and faith in Kroonvale.
Organisers say the event will not only celebrate music but also the spirit of unity, perseverance and devotion that has sustained Ephphatha for half a century.
