An illegal mortuary operating behind a spaza shop in Enkangala, Tshwane, has been shut down by city officials after it was found to be operating despite a previous prohibition order.
The operation was led by Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya and involved officials from the City of Tshwane, SAPS, the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), Home Affairs, Eskom and municipal health inspectors.
During the raid, two undocumented foreign nationals were arrested. Eskom disconnected the property’s electricity due to non-compliance, while both the mortuary and the spaza shop were closed with immediate effect.
Speaking on the operation, Moya said: “We discovered a mortuary operating on the same property as a spaza shop in Enkangala. The mortuary had continued operating despite a previous prohibition order. We have once again issued a prohibition notice and shut down the business. The spaza shop was also closed.”
City officials said they will continue monitoring the property to ensure the businesses do not resume operating illegally.
