Initiates Return Home Safely After Summer Initiation Season in Graaff-Reinet

Date:

Graaff-Reinet communities have welcomed home more than 120 young men who successfully completed the 2025 summer initiation season, with no serious incidents reported.

Families, elders and community members gathered from mid-December 2025 through early January 2026 to celebrate the safe return of initiates from various initiation schools across the area. The homecoming ceremonies were marked by traditional music, song and dance as families dressed in traditional attire accompanied the young men back to their homes.

Stick fighting, a central element of the welcoming rituals, formed part of the celebrations. Elders reminded the community that the practice is rooted in discipline and self-defense rather than aggression, emphasizing respect and cultural pride. Boys to Manhood safe returns.

According to the Graaff-Reinet Initiation Forum secretary, Marco Gerald Dampies, all initiates were legally registered and medically screened at local clinics before the season began. These processes were monitored and confirmed by the Department of Health’s initiation programme coordinator, Mandla Mtshualana, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
