South African entertainment icon Soli Philander has died at the age of 65. The acclaimed actor, comedian, presenter and director’s cause of death has not yet been made public.
Philander became a familiar face to television audiences through his role as host of the Afrikaans music quiz show Liriekeraai, which he presented over several seasons. He also hosted the popular game show Vat ‘n Kans, where his humour and charisma made him a household name.
Tributes have begun pouring in from across the country, with political leaders and members of the arts community recognising his contribution to South African culture.
Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie described Philander as a storyteller who brought laughter and reflection to audiences across the country. He said Philander’s work drew deeply from the lived experiences of communities on the Cape Flats and often used humour to highlight everyday realities.
“For decades, Soli Philander brought laughter, insight and warmth to audiences everywhere in our country,” McKenzie said.
The minister added that artists such as Philander play an important role in strengthening democracy by helping society reflect on itself and find common ground.
“Through his charm and storytelling, Soli reminded us of our shared humanity,” he said.
McKenzie also conveyed his condolences to Philander’s family and friends, saying his voice and humour would continue to live on in the hearts of the many South Africans he entertained and inspired.
Philander’s passing marks the end of a distinguished career in South African entertainment, where he used comedy and storytelling to connect with audiences across cultural and linguistic lines.
