Solomon Chaplaincy Foundation Strengthens Community Trauma Support

Date:

The Solomon Chaplaincy Foundation is helping to strengthen the ability of community members to respond to trauma, grief and other difficult life experiences through training and practical support initiatives. Dr. Henry James Solomon recently facilitated a basic trauma support workshop at the Department of Social Development on behalf of the “It Starts With Me!” initiative and Solomon’s Chaplaincy. Solomon, a former learner of Lingcom Primary and Spandau Secondary School in Graaff-Reinet / Robert Sobukwe Town, grew up in the streets of Santaville, and his journey from humble beginnings has seen him become involved in various platforms aimed at supporting and developing others. The foundation also facilitated Moral Regeneration Modular Training, with 164 participants receiving certification, in association with Resident Prestige Health & Welfare Training Provider and SSTC Training Academy in Kariega.

On Wednesday, 30 September, the foundation thanked participants for investing their time in developing their ability to care for others. “By being here you have already demonstrated a willingness to make a difference,” said Solomon, stressing the importance of ordinary people taking responsibility for the well-being of those around them. The workshop was developed in response to the growing need for practical trauma support within communities, with the foundation noting that families, schools, churches and neighbourhoods are increasingly affected by grief, violence, abuse, loss, disasters and other life-changing experiences. Participants were encouraged to understand that although they cannot take away another person’s pain, they can provide a safe and supportive presence by listening, restoring dignity, encouraging hope and helping people take steps towards healing.

During the workshop, participants received an introductory understanding of trauma and its impact on physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, social and ethical wellbeing. They also began developing practical communication and helping skills, with emphasis placed on empathy, confidentiality, cultural sensitivity and healthy boundaries. Solomon further highlighted the importance of knowing when professional intervention is required and how to make appropriate referrals when people need specialised support. The initiative aims to equip community members with knowledge and skills that can help create stronger families and healthier communities, while encouraging individuals to play an active role in supporting people.
