The never-ending struggle: Parents of new scholars navigate the new academic year

The 2026 academic year began on Wednesday, January 14. As of today, 1,578 115 students have been placed in Grades R, 1, and 8 for the 2026 school year. The actual number of Grade R students registered for the 2026 academic year has not been specified, however this figure shows that a large number of students are placed in this grade.

Parents of new scholars have several problems annually, including navigating school placements, financial concerns, and adapting to new routines.

Despite completing applications on time, some parents are still awaiting confirmation of placements, adding to the anxiety and uncertainty that many parents experience at the beginning of each new school year. Some students were placed hours away from their homes, and their parents had to deny the offers, resulting in students missing school.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona responded to growing frustration from parents over school placements. He says 2 900 learners remain unplaced, including over 700 in grade 1, and adds that the department is working with schools to increase capacity. “ Most children were placed but it was not the parents’ preferred schools so they appealed and we were still reviewing the appeals,” he added.

When it comes to financial concerns, some parents have taken to Facebook to request donations in order to purchase all of their children’s school supplies. Parents frequently fail to plan ahead of time during the holiday season since the same things happen at the start of each year.

Experts emphasise the need of early financial planning and budgeting for the upcoming academic year. To avoid extra debts, parents should begin planning in December rather than early January. Shops promote this tactic by advertising back-to-school at the end of the year.

According to Nelson da Silva, a financial advisor, planning is the first step to a successful financial freedom. “Set realistic financial goals and work hard to make sure that you achieve those goals,” he added.

Parents are encouraged to start planning early in order to assure financial preparation and prevent surprises for the 2027 school year. Track spending and establish savings objectives with a budgeting system.
